Principal's Report
Dear Parents
Welcome back to Term 3 from what I hope has been a relaxing and safe vacation.
There are 49 school days in Term 3 and given the number of events outlined in the 'Dates to Remember' section of this newsletter, I know this time will fly. I therefore urge all parents to peruse the events listed.
Staff News
As you may be aware our Principal, Jim Baker, has taken leave for the duration of Term 3. We wish him all the best for a happy and safe break. I will be acting in Jim's position as Principal for Term 3 and Elizabeth Mahon will take up my position as Deputy Principal – Capability and Development. Good luck 'Liz'. Replacing Liz as a classroom teacher is Katie Barber.
Kay Simpson has been successful in her application for Acting HOD – Humanities at Palm Beach Currumbin for Semester 2, 2016. Given the size of the school, this is a significant achievement for Kay and we wish her all the best.
Jodie Bradley, Head of Department – Science, will take long service leave for the first two weeks of the term. Replacing her will be Justine Goodwin as a classroom teacher.
Mark Slingsby will return to Miami High after a lengthy absence and will teach in Maths/Science/PE Departments.
Jasmine Dive and Gemma Beriman have also returned to Miami High following 12 months maternity leave. Jasmine returns into the Arts/English Department and Gemma returns to the English/Humanities Department in a part-time capacity. The remaining classes will be allocated to Sam Pelham. Sam completed his practicum at Miami earlier this year and was awarded an outstanding rating. We welcome Sam in his first fulltime teaching role for Term 3.
Michael Cooper, who has been with us in Semester 1 is travelling overseas in Term 3 and will be replaced by Karis Hill-Milnes who has gained teacher qualifications.
Also joining the English/Humanities Department for Semester 2 is Sonia Allen for various contracts.
Max Little will be on contract replacing various Arts/English/Humanities staff throughout the term.
Lauren Coleman in Maths/Science will be taking long service leave for the first four weeks of the term. Her replacement is yet to be announced.
Peter Towney will also join the Maths/Science/Humanities staff filling various gaps in the timetable. Welcome Peter.
Student Attendance
The safety and wellbeing of students are the highest priorities for us here at Miami High.
This week, the report When a child is missing: Remembering Tialeigh – a report into Queensland's children missing from out-of-home care was released and the Queensland Government has accepted a recommendation from the Queensland Family and Child Commission that the Department will implement same day notifications advising parents/carers when a child has an unexplained absence from school.
As you would be aware, Miami High has been notifying parents/carers via text message by 10.30 am each day when a child has an 'unexplained absence' from school. Our roll marking procedures have been designed specifically to ensure the safety of our students and to provide timely information to parents regarding a child's absence.
It's crucial that parents/carers respond to our text messages regarding the 'unexplained absence' of a child alerting the school to the fact that they are aware that their child is in indeed absent from school and that child's whereabouts is known.
Therefore, it is imperative that parents/carers personal details are correct in our system. If you change your personal details (e.g. phone numbers, living arrangements) at any time please inform our administration staff.
Remember, Every Day Counts if your child is not attending school they are not learning. If you require assistance to reinforce student attendance please contact the relevant Year Level Dean.
Study Tours
We welcome Kyushu Sangyo High School from Japan who are visiting Miami High for a cultural/ education study tour between the 10th and the 29th July. Kyushu students will be involved in a range of cultural experiences that are designed to enhance their English language study. Thank you to the International Department, all Miami High Staff and our wonderful buddies for contributing to the success of our Study Tour Programs.
School Opinion Survey
Every year all State Schools in Queensland conduct a School Opinion Survey coordinated by Department of Education and Training. As part of this survey, all staff, randomly selected students in Years 8 and 11 and parents are invited to participate. It is a very important survey as it measures the satisfaction level from members of our school community. The survey is designed to help schools identify what they do well and what they can improve. We strongly encourage you to voice your opinion. Individual invitations will be sent home to parents later this week.
School Facebook Account
I urge all parents to 'Like' us on Facebook as all important information pertaining to our upcoming events are posted regularly. The school Facebook account is 'Miami State High School'.
Parent/Student/Teacher Interviews
Parent/Student/Teacher Interviews will be held on Monday 8th August from 2.00 pm to 7.30 pm in the Great Hall. Parents will be sent an email shortly setting out instructions on how to make appointments with relevant members of staff.
I encourage all parents to take this opportunity to attend interviews with their student as this is an integral part of their student's learning journey.
Anyone having difficulty in making appointments online are encouraged to contact our friendly office staff on 5554 0333 for assistance.
Showcase Activities
Thank you in advance to the staff, students and school community involved in the numerous activities throughout the rest of this term. It is great that the following activities will showcase the broad range of excellent learning opportunities provided for students. We hope that you are able to attend the following:

Miami Snow Trip
Welcome back to all students and staff who attended the Miami Snow Trip to Perisher Valley during the holidays. By all accounts the trip was a great success coinciding with the best snow dump Perisher has seen in years. Our students are to be congratulated for their enthusiasm, behaviour and attitude throughout the week. Staff attending commented that this wonderful group of students contributed to making the trip so successful. It's timely to thank our dedicated staff who gave up a week's holiday to take students away, they included Mr Baker, Mr Petersen, Mr Dowker, Mr Wilkinson and Ms Hoy.
Until the next newsletter, best wishes.
Regards
Alison Fahlbusch

Update your Contact Details
ARE YOUR CONTACT DETAILS UP TO DATE – INCLUDING EMERGENCY CONTACTS?
We have been experiencing a number of students presenting to sick bay with serious illnesses/injuries to warrant the school needing to urgently contact a parent/guardian or an emergency contact but with no success. Could you please make sure that your contact details are up to date and ensure your emergency contacts are available if you're not able to be contacted. This is especially important for when parents are travelling away during the school term and leaving students with guardians. SEP Parent Showcase
On Tuesday 21st June 2016, the SEP welcomed parents to showcase the work SEP students had produced over the semester. Displays included samples of artwork, posters, comics and medieval medical textbooks. Students guided their families through classrooms to show off their work and explain what they had learned.
Classes prepared demonstrations of various technologies used throughout SEP. The Year 9 Science class demonstrated to parents and guardians how they made cartoons on the iPads describing the spread of a contagious disease, while the 7A Science class walked families through the making of their Lego Space Movie.
Teachers prepared various activities to challenge SEP students and their families. 7B challenged their families to a grammatical battle using the Smart Board in G10. Parents, aunts, grandparents and students teamed up to create the tallest spaghetti marshmallow tower in a race combining engineering ideas and sheer tenacity. Finally, design wits were challenged in a paper airplane competition, while hunger and thirst were satisfied by the Year 11 and 12 QCIA cooking class who catered a feast.
A big thank you to all the SEP students, teachers, teacher aides and support staff who collectively made this day a huge success.

Graphics – Technology Department
Architecture has been the theme this term for Year 10 and 12 students in Graphics.
Year 10 students have worked to a client brief to design a beachfront restaurant. They have used the program Autodesk Revit to generate 3D models of their designs seeing them come to life in photo renders.
Year 12 Graphics have continued on with a house and land package they designed in Year 11 focusing on the landscaping of all outdoor areas. Some Year 12 students are in their third year of Graphics and have an extensive knowledge of the program producing some very impressive photo renders. Some features include beautifully manicured lawns, contemporary gardens and infinity pools to increase the value of their design.
Year 11 Graphics students had their first taste of Industrial Design with the challenge set to design a light fitting for their chosen audience. They have been researching, sketching and developing their original designs and we have seen some really eccentric and innovative design. It is rewarding to see students work hard to challenge themselves as they begin to 3D model the lights in the program Inventor. I have no doubt there are going to be some exciting final products from this class.
We are proud to announce that Year 11 student Sarah Brown was accepted for a sponsored position in the Griffith University Architecture workshop held in the school holidays. Well done Sarah!

STEM, Spaghetti, Design and Good Times
Cannelloni, Fettuccine, Penne, Ravioli or Spaghetti? Which pasta is the best engineering modelling material? A fun question to be answered. Our Year 7 students have been learning about engineering and design by building spaghetti bridges. The aim was to make a bridge based on the Engineers Australia Spaghetti Bridge Competition. Students design the bridge to make it as light as possible and still hold the 750g. I have introduced this competition to many students over the past 25 years with great success. Former spaghetti bridge students have gone on to work at NASA and Boeing after being inspired to bring their Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) alive.

Year 9 Drama
Year 9 Drama presents Twisted Tales to Miami Community Centre
On Friday 17th June 2016, children from Miami Community Centre came across to the big kids school to watch a special performance by the Year 9 Drama students. The Year 9 students have worked all term on creating Theatre in Education pieces, based on Fairy Tales they reworked to communicate important messages especially for their 4 - 6year old audience. Through Goldilocks & the Three Bears, The Ugly Duckling and Little Red Riding Hood the young audience learnt about bullying, appreciating differences and stranger danger. The MCC kids were a fantastic audience and the students loved performing for them. Well done to the Year 9 Drama students!

Dance Excellence
To conclude the term, the Year 11 Dance students took to the stage with their 'Disco Fever' routine bringing back all the glitz and glam of the 70's. The performance was collaboratively choreographed by the students as part of their Term 1 Senior Dance Unit, where students were immersed in the study of social dance through different eras. Students were taught a variety of disco moves which had to be included in their choreography. It was a fantastic performance enjoyed by all, particularly those who were able to relive the music, costumes and dance moves of the 70's and a wonderful way to farewell our International students in the class.
All the Dance students are now busy preparing for the upcoming Dance Excel Showcase which is set to be nothing short of spectacular!

As a celebration of the outstanding work of Year 8 and Year 9 students of English, the first ever Principal's Breakfast was held on Tuesday 21st June.
Fifteen students were treated to a buffet breakfast at Callinan's restaurant, catered for by Year 11 students and super chef, Ms Karen Purdy.
The students feasted on blueberry pancakes with maple syrup, scrambled eggs and bacon, corn fritters and a variety of cereals and juices. Everyone had seconds, and some even had thirds!
Principal Mr Jim Baker, and Deputy Principals Ms Alison Fahlbush and Ms Melinda Jackson joined in congratulating the students on their fine efforts.
I anticipate that the Principal's Breakfast will become an event held every term.

Year 9 Media's Shoe Advertisements
But wait, there's more……….Year 9 Media students promised everything from quality state-of-the-art materials to comfort and innovative technological gadgetry in their 'new' shoe product videos. There were shoes that played music, shoes that improved performance, shoes that heated and cooled and shoes that just looked 'cool'. The green screen room got a workout and the resulting special effects were out of this world. Shoes went through space, some went back in time and some shoes even partially disappeared completely. This class did an outstanding job of learning and using new software and all of their videos were highly creative and engaging. Well done guys.

CONSTRUCTION READY Program
The Construction Ready program organised by DET in partnership with the GROCON Company has started this term for Years 11 and 12 students from different Gold Coast schools. Participating students will be completing Certificate 1 Construction course through GC School of Construction with 80 hours structured work placement in the trade industry eg. Plumbing, Carpentry, Concreting, Plastering etc. Christian Cartwright, Year 12 student, is one of the program participants and the following is his report.
"This year I decided that I wanted to be in the construction industry after Year 12. I am enrolled in the Furnishing studies at school but missed out enrolling in the Construction course last year. I wanted to become an Electrician, but I know I will need to start in the general construction to get my foot in the door. We start our course at 7.00 in the morning just like a normal tradies start of work and at the moment we are learning tool handling, setting up work sites etc. In a few weeks time, we will be asking the sub-contractors in the Parkland Showgrounds for work placements. I totally enjoy the program, being with other students that share the same interest as me."
School-based Traineeship and Apprenticeship (SAT)
SAT positions and industry events information are uploaded on the school FACEBOOK page and notifications through emails to parents and students. Flyers for more details are posted in the Library and reminders on the Students Notices.
Currently, various employers are looking for school based trainees and apprentices to work in their businesses and who will undertake one of the below qualifications. Interested students need to submit resumes to the Industry Liaison Office. Students and parents are welcome to call or visit for more information.

Following is a testimonial from Claudia Agius, Year 12 student who is currently completing a Certificate III Business traineeship with Classic Holidays.
"My overall career goal after Year 12 is to operate and manage a chain of hotels, this involves starting from the bottom and learning from professional people the skills required to become something big. My traineeship has taught me the required skills and expectations to be able to thrive, grow and learn within the Hospitality/Tourism Industry. As a school-based trainee it has opened many opportunities for me that I thought were not possible at my age. Working for Classic Holidays has opened my connection to people that all play a vital role within the operations of the Hospitality/Tourism industry. Currently I work 1 day per week at the Classic Holidays Head Office and will also be gaining experience one day a week at Tiki Village, one of Classic Holidays many hotels in Australia. When school is completed, I wish to take part in Classic Holidays Manager in Development program next year which may involve completing a Diploma in Hospitality Management".

We have two teams competing at the Canterbury College Maths Teams Challenge on the 21st July. This problem solving event involves 60 teams from Private and State schools across Brisbane and the Gold Coast. Our teams are:
Year 7 and 8 - Brooke Scullion, Sophie Taylor Pritchard, Riley Coy, Jessica Leer and Saxon Rose
Year 9 and 10 - Alixana McFarlane, Johnson Tsai, Cody Clark, Judah Winsor and Mia Hori
We wish them well!
We are proud of the Semester One academic achievements across all Mathematics subjects and congratulate our top achieving students. In particular Year 12 student Jacent Zhou who is currently placed at VHA8 in Mathematics B and VHA9 in Mathematics C and Year 11 student Wendy Wang currently placed at VHA7 in Mathematics B and VHA9 in Mathematics C. Outstanding achievements!
I encourage all students to attend Maths Club every Tuesday afternoon 3.00 – 4.00 pm in the Library. We set a new record of 78 students across all grade levels in the week prior to exams last term. I appreciate the contribution of our dedicated Mathematics Teachers who give up their own time each week. We a have strong culture of student effort and commitment.
This is a busy term for all Year 12 Mathematics students with assignments out to students early in the term, QCS exams and Exam Shutdown upon us very quickly. Remember to be well organised and commit regular time at home toward exam preparation. This will alleviate pressure at the end of the term.

Community Engagement - Miami Community Children's Centre
Numerous Junior Secondary students recently participated in a community engagement program with Miami Community Children's Centre. This initiative was established as our school wishes to enhance our relationship with local businesses and community groups to create unique, innovative teacher and learning experiences for all students. This is in line with our school's values of Respect, Education, Self-Discipline, People, Environment, Care and Cooperation and Tolerance which are observed in the word RESPECT.
The students and teachers ran individual lessons for the children in the following areas:
Science: A sound experiment where our students and Mr McKillop assisted 23 children to make chirping chickens in our Inspire building.
Languages: Mr Dooley and four of our dedicated junior students helped the children to learn how to speak and sing in Japanese.
English: Ms Temelkoska and her team of junior students read short stories to five groups of children. They then donated the five story books to the Children's Centre.
Humanities: Children enjoyed painting and colouring in maps from around the world with the assistance of Mr Cooper and students.
The Arts: The children were entertained by Ms Creasey's Year 9 Drama assessment performances focusing around fairy tales.
Thank you to all of the students and staff members who assisted with this initiative. Miami CCC's staff, parents and children cannot wait until we visit them again in Term 3.
