Principal's Report

Dear Parents

Welcome back to Term 4. It is hard to believe that we are over three quarters of the school year through and only 17 school days remain prior to the commencement of end of year examinations for Year 12 Students, and 26 days remaining for Year 11 students.

As you were aware, I was on leave for Term 3 taking a break as well as participating in School Reviews throughout Queensland on behalf of the School Improvement Unit in Central Office. I thoroughly enjoyed the break and as a School Reviewer, the opportunity to support and assist other schools in improving school performance.

Our school's focus at this stage is on preparing students for end of year assessments and planning for 2016. Last week applications closed for 2017 Student Leader positions and I look forward to their speeches in-front of peers. The field is very strong, which is a wonderful reflection on the high calibre of students applying for these positions.

Every year at this time I attach an article by Michael Grose, a parenting educator, titled 'When Things Go Wrong at School' as students and therefore parents experience higher levels of stress associated with approaching exams, and for year 12 students, the uncertainties associated with gaining a learning pathway or work next year.

I encourage you to read the article and contact us if you believe we can be of assistance with your student. Your support is vital and will make a huge difference in developing your student's resilience and coping skills.

I recommend the article as there are lessons for us all.

Update your Contact Details

ARE YOUR CONTACT DETAILS UP TO DATE – INCLUDING EMERGENCY CONTACTS?

We have been experiencing a number of students presenting to sick bay with serious illnesses/injuries to warrant the school needing to urgently contact a parent/guardian or an emergency contact but with no success. Could you please make sure that your contact details are up to date and ensure your emergency contacts are available if you're not able to be contacted. This is especially important for when parents are travelling away during the school term and leaving students with guardians. Please feel free to contact the school either by email admin@miamishs.eq.edu.au or telephoning 5554 0333 to confirm your current details.

NOTE TO PARENTS/CARERS

The school database program can only allocate ONE address per student. If a student is residing equally between two addresses, the parents/carers must decide which address will be allocated as the main address for the student. The second address can be noted on the student's hardcopy personal file.

If a second report is required to be emailed, please contact the school in order for us to record this.

EXCURSION TO SWELL

What a great way to celebrate the last day of Term 3. Our ESCAPE students headed off in our beautiful new bus to Currumbin where we immersed ourselves in the SWELL Festival. We spent a wonderful afternoon walking along the beach in gorgeous weather looking at the sculptured offerings on the beach and boardwalk. The humungous deck chairs were a big hit as was the milk crate pyramid. Everyone was impressed that they were allowed to go inside and that it was so cool in there.

The group had a great day all topped off with the traditional SEP sausage sizzle with onions. The ESCAPE program allows our rambunctious and quiet students to leave the school campus and interact in a variety of community outings from rock climbing, to tree planting, to bike riding. It is excellent to see them working together and enjoying all these activities as a group. Well done team!

Olympic Athlete visits Miami SHS.

This term, in Year 8 English, students have been studying a unit on writing a Memoir. Our focus of study has been the Olympics with students looking at a range of literary and non-literary texts. On Tuesday 13 September, Andrew Grant, an Australian Olympic Athlete came to Miami SHS to talk to the students and recount his journey to the Olympics.

Andrew represented Australia in the 2012 London Olympics as a member of the Australian Volleyball team. Andrew was able to give the students his first-hand experience of, and bring to life, the Spirit of the Olympics.

He talked to the students about setting his goal to participate in the Olympics, and how he pursued his dreams to overcome obstacles from making the Australian Men's Team to be a part of the first Australian Olympic Team to qualify to the Olympics. Andrew also talked to the tenacity, single mindedness and sacrifices needed to be an elite athlete.

"Our team didn't win a medal, but I achieved my goal, which was to compete at the Olympics," Andrew told the students.

Students also had the opportunity to ask Andrew questions about his experiences.

Our Year 8 students can now use Andrew's story, as well as the range of other Olympic athletes and events studied in class, to create their own Olympic memoir.

Miami SHS would like to thank Andrew Grant for giving his time to talk to Year 8 Students.

Thank you to Karis Hills-Milne for organising this opportunity for students.

Humanities Department - Business Update

Congratulations to the Year 9 Business Studies class on a successful food festival market event. As a part of the subject Business Studies, students start up a business venture where they are required to establish market and run a business. This activity is one of the most rewarding experiences in the subject, as all students are involved in the running of the business and they are able, through this activity, to experience first-hand how a real business is run. Students discover and learn to appreciate how difficult it can be to run a business and make a profit.

This year's business ventures were fantastic with students selling a variety of delicious sweet and savoury treats. All business ventures were a success with all groups making a profit. A special mention to the BBQ boys: consisting of Mason, Jasper and Jack, who made a whopping $110 profit from their business idea. Also team 'Sweet and Savoury' and 'Sweet Tooth' who also made fantastic profits.

Mathematics Dept Update

Welcome to Term 4 and a flying finish to the school year. Students have achieved outstanding results in Mathematics with three quarters of a year completed to date.

It is vitally important that Year 11 and 12 students continue to work hard for the remainder of the year to consolidate their R6 rank order position. The R6 document is a QCAA document used in all Authority subjects, which means Mathematics A, B and C in our Faculty. It is a vertical number line showing student placement on level of achievement bands e.g VHA10, VHA9, VHA8….VHA1, HA10, HA9, HA8…HA1, SA10, SA9.. etc. Senior students are well aware of these documents and know their placement which contributes to OP and Selection Rank Calculations. In finishing the year strongly students can maintain their position and cement their great work to date.

Once again I would actively encourage all Mathematics students from Years 7 to 12 to attend Maths Club. It is held every Tuesday afternoon in the library from 3:00pm to 4:00pm and is attended by all Maths teachers who offer homework, assignment and exam preparation support. We all appreciate our dedicated Teachers giving up their own time each week.

I congratulate all students on their hard work in class in 2016 and encourage all to finish the year in a positive mindset.

Raising funds for charity

The Healthy Lifestyles class this term were at it again raising awareness and funds for a very worthy cause. Throughout the term students researched many local charities and initiatives and then as a class decided upon who they feel are most worthy of our efforts. In Term 3 they decided to support the Children's Cancer Foundation whose main roles are to give family support and help to fund clinical care and research into curing childhood cancers.

During Term 3 the students chose to hold a bake sale. In the kitchens they cooked up a storm creating tasty lamingtons, brownies, chocolate cake and Malteser cheesecake. They sold out of all their products and raised a total of $234 dollars that will be donated to the Children's Cancer Foundation in Term 4.

Japan Trip 2016

ようこそ! Welcome!

On Wednesday September 14, 20 students accompanied by Ms Fahlbusch, Mr Wilson, and Ms Hamilton and myself departed the Gold Coast for Japan. Japan is a country so different from Australia that the trip was destined from the beginning to be an amazing adventure; and it did not disappoint.

Day two: We arrived at Tokyo and began our trip with a Tokyo a two-day tour. Using a 'suica' card, similar to a go-card, students used the busy Japanese subway to explore the famous Shibuya crossing, Akihabara electric district, Shinjuku and enjoyed sunset on day one at the Tokyo Skytree. The greater Tokyo metropolitan region has a population of around 35 million and the great sprawl of Tokyo was evident with a visit to the Tokyo Sky Tree which sits at 634 metres, making it the tallest structure in the city.

Day three: The group made their way to the Meiji Shrine which is dedicated to the spirits of Emperor Meiji and his wife. No Tokyo tour would be complete without a visit to the fashion famous Harajuku.

Day four: A favourite day for many participants, day three was a visit to Mt Fuji which is the tallest mountain in Japan and a volcano. After a cruise around Lake Ashi, a cable car took us up Mt Komagatake where we were enveloped in fog while trying to walk to the shrine.

Day five: The Japanese bullet train reaches speeds of up to 300km/hr and on Sunday, we travelled to Hiroshima by bullet train. The scenery speeds by so fast it seems a blur from the window. Upon arriving in Hiroshima we made our way to the Hiroshima Peace Park and Atomic Bomb Museum which proved to be an informative day for all students. Hiroshima, a former castle town, emerged from the ashes of the World War II atomic bombing to be a world leader in fighting nuclear warfare. A testimony from a survivor really explained to us the tragedy that faced Hiroshima as a result of the bombing and reinforced the need to strive for world peace.

Day six: Miyajima Island is famous for the large floating Tori gate. After arriving on the island, the students were instantly taken with the deer that live there. Exploring the island was a fun day, even with the rain.

Day seven: Due to the rain as a result of the typhoon, we were unable to visit Himeji Castle and instead explored Hiroshima city.

Day eight: Catching the bullet train back to Osaka, we used our JR Pass to travel to Osaka castle. The castle's interior is a museum that tells the story of its ownership. Students then met their homestay families. The families were all very excited to meet the students.

Day nine: A day in homestay.

Day ten: After being dropped off by their homestay families, the peaceful surrounds of Nara deer park were explored. Within the park are many deer that freely roam around. Many of our group enjoyed feeding the deer and came away with love bite mementoes from the over-friendly deer.

Day eleven: We then travelled to Kyoto, the ancient capital of Japan. As the ancient capital, the city is rich in history with many castles, temples and shrines. We were lucky enough to visit the golden splendour that is Kinkakuji (a temple made from gold,) walk across the nightingale floor of Nijo-Castle and drink the water that makes you prettier at Kiyomizu Temple.

Day twelve: The aquarium in Osaka is very famous for the amazing displays. Particularly exciting were the dolphins, seals and a whale shark. We then travelled to Shinsaibashi, which is an area with a 650 metre undercover shopping street. Everyone loved ABC Mart, a shoe shop that was ridiculously cheap!

Day thirteen: Our trip finished with a visit to Universal Studios in Osaka, where we enjoyed rides based on famous movies such as Jurassic Park, Jaws and Spiderman. May students enjoyed exploring Hogwarts Castle while drinking a butterbeer.

With a jam-packed 14 days of travel, our students learned much about Japanese lifestyle. Of particular enjoyment was the organisation and courteous manners of Japanese society. Having standing and walking lanes when using an escalator seemed strange at first, but students soon wished we had a similar process at home. Seeing the growth in confidence and maturity in our students, as well as new friendships that formed, made the Japan Trip a great success.

Thank you to the Miami SHS staff for giving up their holidays to provide our students with an unforgettable experience.

Thank you to the 20 superb students who made the 2016 Japan Trip such a success, you were wonderful ambassadors for Miami High.

Wellbeing Update

It has been a busy year with all year levels now having participated in their Good Vibes Days.

The feedback from everyone had been very positive with 90% of students rating the days an 8/10 or higher. The topics that students rated highly include Drug and Alcohol Education, Healthy Relationships, Drumming, Mindfulness and Grief and Loss. We were fortunate to have guest speakers such as Paul Stanley "One Punch Can Kill", Simon Santosha "Healthy Relationships", Nicole Joy " Mindfulness and Body Image", Matt Speakman "Resilience" and Brad Huddleston on "Dark Side of Technology". These Good Vibes days provide students with valuable information for the development of a positive wellbeing.

This term we have our final Parent Information evening for the year called Party Safe. It is that time of the year again when students want to celebrate their end of school year by partying with their friends. This evening will provide you with valuable information you can't afford to miss.

We are fortunate to have a highly experienced Lawyer Andrew Moloney from Moloney MacCallum Lawyers. Andrew will discuss the rights and responsibilities involved in hosting a teenage party. The issues of drugs and alcohol with underage teens and what it means to supervise a party and what can happen if things don't go to plan.

Queensland Mental Health Week is from the 9 October to the 15th. This week highlights the importance of valuing our own mental health and wellbeing and that of our friends, family and colleagues, at home, school and work. Remember it courage to seek help. WELLBEING TIPS

Wellbeing is about feeling good and doing well for yourself and others. Here is one way to "feel good"!

Meditation! We all hear about the benefits of mediation to reduce stress but what else can it do?

This extract is taken from The Art of Living's website:

Physical Benefits of Meditation

With meditation, the physiology undergoes a change and every cell in the body is filled with more prana (energy). This produces more joy, peace, enthusiasm as the level of prana in the body increases.

On a physical level, meditation:

  • Lowers high blood pressure
  • Lowers the levels of blood lactate, reducing anxiety attacks
  • Decreases any tension-related pain, such as, tension headaches, ulcers, insomnia, muscle and joint problems
  • Increases serotonin production that improves mood and behaviour
  • Improves the immune system
  • Increases the energy level, as you gain an inner source of energy

Mental Benefits of Meditation

Meditation brings the brainwave pattern into an Alpha state that promotes healing. The mind becomes fresh, delicate and beautiful. With regular practice of meditation:

  • Anxiety decreases
  • Emotional stability improves
  • Creativity increases
  • Happiness increases
  • Intuition develops
  • Gain clarity and peace of mind
  • Problems become smaller
  • Meditation sharpens the mind by gaining focus and expands through relaxation
  • A sharp mind without expansion causes tension, anger and frustration
  • An expanded consciousness without sharpness can lead to lack of action/progress
  • The balance of a sharp mind and an expanded consciousness brings perfection

Meditation makes you aware - that your inner attitude determines your happiness.

6 Routes to Respect

When our kids ignore us, stomp their feet, slam the door, or say "NO!", it gets under our skin in a way that few other things can. Whether they are toddlers or teens, we want respect – and we want it NOW!

Have you ever found yourself towering over your children yelling something like this at them?

"THAT'S IT! I'VE HAD ENOUGH. YOU NEED TO SHOW ME SOME RESPECT!"

It's more than a little ironic that we demand respect in such a disrespectful way. So when our children are disrespectful, what are our options?
