Principal’s Report
Dear Parents
As we approach the last day of school for 2017, it is timely to reflect upon what an incredible month November has been.
Without a doubt, the Year 12 Formal at SeaWorld on Tuesday 14 November and their Graduation on Thursday 16 November was a highlight for the school. Witnessing 164 seniors leave our school with their graduation certificate was a moment of joy and pride. Their final success was a culmination of their own hard work and determination, coupled with targeted support, individual tracking and guidance from our teaching staff to ensure all of our students achieved their personal best.
I am pleased to announce that 100% of our Year 12 students attained a Queensland Certificate of Education this year. My sincere appreciation extends not only to our teachers, senior school performance team and support staff, but to all parents, carers and families who have played an active role in their child’s high school journey. The sense of community and collective responsibility is evident at our school, and I am so proud of everyone. We wish the Class of 2017 all the very best as they discover life beyond the school gates – they will be sorely missed.
As we prepare for a New Year and new transitions, we also look forward to welcoming new students from in and around the catchment that will be commencing Year 7 with us in January. It was a pleasure to see their smiling faces and witness their enthusiasm last Thursday at their Transition Day. The staff at Miami are eagerly awaiting your arrival to high school and look forward to watching you excel over the next 6 years. I am also pleased to report that Miami State High School is experiencing an enormous enrolment growth for 2018 which is testament to the hard work this year in our school community.
Administration Refurbishment
During the holiday period our Administration Building is undertaking a much needed refurbishment. This refurbishment is well overdue and will make our Administration Building more functional and visually appealing from the Gold Coast Highway. We are hoping that the renovations will be complete by Monday 15 January 2018 when our school office reopens and we look forward to welcoming you to our reception.
Hats
From Day 1 2018 Miami State High School will be implementing a Sun Smart Policy. It will be compulsory for all students to wear a school hat for any outdoor timetabled class activities and during break times when out in the sun.
I am pleased to report that all students will receive a school hat at the commencement of the 2018 school year. These hats were designed by Billabong and have been endorsed by our P & C and our student body.

Royal Australian Navy Helicopter visit
A unique learning opportunity was given to Miami High School students with a personal visit by the 816 Squadron MH-60R Seahawk Helicopter on World Teachers’ Day. Students received first-hand knowledge on the operation of the aircraft.
Stated Principal, Sue Dalton, “We were excited as a school to have the Seahawk Helicopter visit us, something they rarely do. We have been working hard to go above and beyond for our students, to deliver exceptional learning experiences through forming extraordinary community partnerships – this certainly exemplifies this!”
Community wasn’t forgotten either with Miami SHS inviting local primary school students and the public into their school to experience the visit first hand.

New Digital System in 2018
To keep up-to-date with our ever changing technological environment we are moving to a new digital system next year called Daymap. This is an online system that will allow teachers, students and parents 24 hours access to all class resources, assessment, school communication and notices along with Parent/Teacher interview bookings with a simple school login.
As this is a new system to us we will be releasing areas in stages. Teachers will have access from the start of the year with students being given access early Term One. Our Parent Portal will hopefully be released Semester Two next year. This will allow you to monitor student’s progress and communicate with classroom teachers easily. More information will be given closer to the time.
As we are venturing into a more digital system it is going to be even more important for students to have access to this technology at all times and more convenient if they are a member of our BYOD system. As a school we attempt to provide this technology to all our students, however, lack of funding has reduced our resources and therefore may not be accessible at all times to all students. If at all possible you can provide a BYO device to your student/s this will allow them to achieve the full benefits of our new system at all times.
We have increased the capabilities of the BYOD system and therefore increased the types of machines that will connect. A very simple basic laptop that has a Wi-Fi connection and will run the online Microsoft Suite (that is available free to all QLD students) is all that is required and can be obtained at a low cost. If you require more details about the BYOD system that we run, type of device required or the free download of the Microsoft Office Suite please contact our IT Department or see details on our website.
We are very excited about this new innovative way that we will provide our curriculum to students and look forward to working together to provide the best opportunities for our students.

Miami High Students Artworks to hang in the Commonwealth Games Athletes Village
Over the past six months, students at Miami High were given a very unique opportunity to create artworks that would hang in the Commonwealth Games Athletes rooms. Athletes would then be given the opportunity to take the artworks with them when they return to their home countries.
Students were given the brief to create a canvas that depicted the theme ‘Our Place’, with students able to create images that they felt truly showed the beauty of where we live.
Athletes will then be encouraged to take a photo of themselves holding the artwork and upload this to Facebook/Instagram with the hashtag #SHARETHEDREAM. Parents and students can then search Instagram or Facebook using this hashtag to see if the athlete has replied with a message.

Miami High Students do the ‘Borobi Boogie’
As part of the Commonwealth Games lead up, Year 7 students at Miami High got into the spirit of the games and performed the Borobi Boogie to the song “Days of Gold” by Busby Marou. Each class learned the dance and put their own spin on the dance to make it their own. The video will be shared on the Miami High Facebook page in the coming weeks! Stay tuned……
Australian Business Week a Huge Success
Entrepreneurial education at Miami State High has expanded further this year with the introduction of Australian Business Week (ABW). ABW has been running in the library all of Week 9 with 4 teams assuming the roles of the company’s employees and running their company over a simulated two year period in competition against each other.
Students were judged on their company oral presentations, business reports, trade displays, TV commercials and also on their results from the financial simulation. Awards were presented at the Awards Presentation Ceremony and Afternoon Tea at the Library on 1st December.
Company “Sugar and Spice” were the overall winners.
We have fantastic community support with the current Chairperson of the School Council at Miami State High, Mr John Campbell, and Anna Nipperess from The Chemist Warehouse working as company mentors all week. In addition, thank you to Amanda Amey from MoneyQuest Financial Services and local MP, Ray Stevens, for supporting our students.

Years 7 – 9 students’ education was further enhanced by participating in the ABW event at Miami State High. Miami State High’s continued commitment to unique learning experiences for the students.
ICAS Mathematics Results
Congratulations to the 21 Students from Years 7 – 12 who achieved Distinctions and High Distinctions in the Australian Mathematics Competition and ICAS Mathematics. Of particular note were the eight Year 7 students on stage proving the future is bright in Mathematics at Miami State High School. Sophie Taylor-Pritchard (Year 8) and Mia Hori (Year 11) achieved High Distinctions, while Johnson Tsai (Year 10) was the best in school finishing in the top 2% of the country.
BUFTA Awards
On Saturday 25 November, recent Year 12 graduate, Finn Robinsen, will attend the 2017 BUFTA Gala Awards at Bond University. Finn's inspirational and visually beautiful documentary The Koombumerri People: Life Goes On was one of only 18 student films, from across Australia, to be nominated for an award in this prestigious film competition. The Koombummerri People: Life Goes On was also award the inaugural Industry Partnerships Best Film Award at the 2017 Miami High M'Oscars film festival. These amazing achievements are a testament to Finn's hard work and determination. Wishing Finn all the best in his future endeavours.

JAPANESE FILM FESTIVAL EXCURSION
The Japanese Film Festival in Australia (JFF) is presented by The Japan Foundation, Sydney. The JFF started in 1997, and is now one of the largest celebrations of Japanese films in the world. This festival aims to support and grow interest in Japanese films and cinema culture throughout the Asia-Pacific region, including Australia.
This year, we took 46 students from Years 8-12 into Brisbane to enjoy the film ‘Chihayafuyu’ – a film about a couple of childhood friends, bound by their passion for competitive Karuta (a traditional Japanese card game based on classic poetry). After the movie, students enjoyed an obento lunch in the Myers Centre before heading back to the Gold Coast. The students enjoyed the film and had a great day. We look forward to being a part of the JFF in 2018.

Danc’eD in the Spotlight 2017
25 students participated in Danc’eD in the Spotlight 2017 at the Gold Coast Arts Centre on the 20 October Danc’eD is a showcase of dance from primary and secondary students of the Gold Coast. It is organised by Gold Coast Dance Teachers and held annually as a non-competitive event, bringing students and teachers who share a passion for dance together for a day of entertainment. This year Miami State High was represented by a very talented group of junior students who performed an African jazz routine titled, Tribal Beat, choreographed by Ms Miranda van’t Hof. The students set the stage alight with colour, energy and passion to a rousing applause from the audience. The evening finished with a combined schools finale which filled the theatre with dance students. Throughout the day, the students were provided with the opportunity to participate in free workshops which included jazz, contemporary and hip hop. Well done to all of the students involved as it was a fantastic day of dance, thoroughly enjoyed by all!

Miami High Dance Xtreme 2017
2017 has proven to be a very busy year for the Dance Xtreme students who have already performed at several school events this term including the Sports Awards Evening and VET Awards Evening. They will finish the year with a final performance at the Miami High Academic Awards Night. As part of their development in dance, the students have also had the opportunity to work with industry professionals through a number of workshops this term. Workshops were provided by RAW Dance Company in the genres of advanced contemporary dance and jazz along with intermediate hip hop. The workshops were both challenging and enjoyable!

Dance Excellence Year 7, 8 and 9
2017 has been a truly fantastic year in Dance Excellence, made all the more memorable by the wonderful students within our programs. The Year 7 Dance Excellence students finished the year with their contemporary student-devised choreography based on Australian Landscapes. Students were responsible for choreography and costuming and had to create a contemporary performance from a stimulus with a soundscape as aural accompaniment. Their performances were outstanding!
Year 8 Dance Excellence concluded the year with their post-modern student-devised choreography and were equally impressive. After learning the skills associated with contact improvisation, students created a post-modern dance performance in the style of Cirque du Soleil combining contact work with acrobatics. Their performances were based on the seasons which evoked some very creative costume designs. A special congratulations must also be extended to the three Year 8 Arts classes who had the opportunity to experience dance this year within the Arts rotations. The students were engaged in a percussive dance unit learning body percussion, hip hop and street dance through workshops, choreographic development lessons and performances.
Finally to conclude 2017, the Dance Excellence students will be off on the yellow brick road to see the Wizard of Oz at the Queensland Performing Arts Complex on Wednesday 29 November. The students and staff are very excited for this excursion, which I’m sure will be enjoyed by all as a wonderful way to cap off an excellent year in dance!

“ENERGIES” 2017 – Combined Gold Coast Secondary School Art Exhibition
Gold Coast City Art Gallery, in collaboration with the ENERGIES organising committee, again exhibited the works of art by highly talented Senior Secondary school students from over 27 schools across the Gold Coast. ENERGIES is an annual exhibition that highlights the breadth and scope of the Qld Senior Visual Arts curriculum and presents the creative outcomes in a non-competitive, community event. Miami SHS students, Milli McAndrew, Ashleigh Lewis, Larni Stevens, Grace Pemberton and Harlie Webster-Inch, were selected by senior art teachers, Ms Karen Wilbur-Smith and Mr Scott Barnard, from a Senior cohort of over 40 students, to participate in this year’s exhibition. Congratulations to all students for their outstanding efforts and for representing our school at such a prestigious event.

Senior Drama Students Perform Blackrock
For the majority of 2017, the Year 11/12 Drama in Practice students studied the famous play ‘Blackrock’. They were also fortunate enough to attend the performance of ‘Blackrock’ at La Boite Theatre earlier in the year. The students were completely mesmerised by the professional actors and their ability to communicate sensitive themes to the audience members. For our final project, the students were required to create a class production, and as they were so impressed by the professional performance of the play, they decided to create their own production based on the scenes from ‘Blackrock’.
For this task students were required to work as an ensemble, to not only showcase their talent but to also present their audience members with educational messages that dealt with peer pressure, class and generational conflict and the difference between a friend and a mate. In order for this show to be successful students also undertook other production roles, such as writers, producers, stage designers and make-up artists. They enjoyed exploring these roles as they provided challenges students didn’t experience before. After many weeks of working hard, students performed on the 31 October. It was a wonderful experience watching the students grow into confident actors. They truly did an amazing job and should be so proud of their work. It was also great to see parents and carers turn up to the performance to support the students. Through this process students were able to engage creatively, where they were nourished to use their imagination to create work that reflected their own lives and stories in order to develop confidence and mature as young adults.

Year 9 Business Expo
Year 9 Humanities students recently held a business expo that showcased innovative business ideas. Students formed a small business and conducted feasibility studies to determine the viability of a business idea, while also incorporating decision making for marketing, human resources, and financial and operational management strategies.
Products ranged from a kettle that made drinks cooler rather than hotter, to apps that found the foods you need when you need it!
Guests were able to visit each stall, hear the business pitch and, in most cases, test a prototype. Ballots were then given to the guests to vote for the top three business ideas.

Miami students express gratitude to their teachers at World Teachers Day 2017.
AFL 9s Mixed Competition
On Tuesday 14 November, 24 Junior and Senior Miami SHS students competed at the AFL 9s mixed competition at Runaway Bay sporting fields. Our Junior team, lost their first three games, however came back to win their final game against Trinity College 1. Our Senior team, won their first two games however lost to Benowa in the final game of the day. Considering the complexity of the game (having to consistently mark the ball on the full without dropping it), the students did extremely well and represented Miami SHS with pride. The Junior player of the tournament went to Tyson Edwards and Senior player of the tournament went to Daiyo Takahara. We look forward to developing our skills in the future. Bring on 2018 and the AFL Q Cup. Trials for such teams will be early in Term 1, 2018.

Wellbeing Update
We have had a busy year with our wellbeing activities with all students participating throughout the year. Thanks to all the staff and as Christmas approaches we look forward to relaxing over the holidays with family and friends. We need to remember to take time out to be kind to ourselves so we don’t burn out from all the celebrations. Take the time to enjoy the little things in life such as time with your family, good food and friends. And remember to be grateful for all the little things that make up our day. Have a happy and safe Christmas.
Celebrate the Little Good Things
When we celebrate the “big” things that happen, are these the things that really matter in life? Is celebrating the winning of a finals sporting event as important as celebrating the admirable persistence and self-discipline of turning up to train week in and week out? Is celebrating the winning of an academic award as important as the self-regulation it takes to follow the learning and thinking processes diligently for a semester? Is having a great tan and wearing the “cool” gear as important as eating healthy and exercising to improve ourselves on the inside and out?
Our students are receiving mixed messages about what it is to thrive and flourish; big 'oncers' or little good things often.
People with a healthy state of wellbeing and sense of purpose focus on doing the everyday ordinary things well. People who don’t focus on the extraordinary things.
Unfortunately, in the 21st century, we seem to be only interested in the end performance, rather than what it takes to accomplish something special. Just look at the over the top emphasis put on NAPLAN outcomes. The stress for students, staff and parents is unacceptable, with over 25% of our young people experiencing mental health issues. Are you aware that 2016 was the first year that suicide, not road fatality, was the main cause of death in adolescents? Yet the powers that be don’t seem to have the awareness nor willingness to disrupt this unhealthy status quo. Isn’t developing the social-emotional resilience skills and state of physical wellbeing of our children more important processes to focus on? How can young people with a less than healthy state of wellbeing live a meaningful life and perform on academic tasks? We have the cart before the horse.
These distorted attitudes are further fuelled by the sensationalism of the big occasion promoted by the media, which lulls us into the false mindset that something has to be super special to really matter. This is compounded by our public figures, who thrive on these events, to distract us from looking at what they are actually achieving day in and day out. It’s time for all of us to wake up that the media dazzle and cheap chat are not what really matters in our worlds.
The efforts which should really matter for all of us, and which should be zestfully celebrated, are the little things we get done on a daily basis to achieve what we set out to do. Preparing fresh foods for our evening meals, exercising for an hour daily with our family rain, hail or shine and saying hello with a bright smiling face when we pass others in the street are little things that really make a difference. There is no doubt all of us could come up with many more of these warm and spirit lifting acts.
Every single one of us can make a positive difference in our families, schools and communities, if we choose to live by the code, to feel good, first do good, no matter how insignificant our actions may seem to be. Little things add up and are at the heart of what is worth celebrating.
Wouldn’t it be great if we had boards up at home, at school and in the community on which we could write down and acknowledge the good things we are doing as individuals to help us all thrive and flourish?

Update your Contact Details
ARE YOUR CONTACT DETAILS UP TO DATE – INCLUDING EMERGENCY CONTACTS?
We have been experiencing a number of students presenting to sick bay with serious illnesses/injuries to warrant the school needing to urgently contact a parent/guardian or an emergency contact but with no success. Could you please make sure that your contact details are up to date and ensure your emergency contacts are available if you’re not able to be contacted. This is especially important for when parents are travelling away during the school term and leaving students with guardians. Please feel free to contact the school either by email admin@miamishs.eq.edu.au or telephoning 5554 0333 to confirm your current details.
Parent Contact
NOTE TO PARENTS/CARERS
The school database program can only allocate ONE address per student. If a student is residing equally between two addresses, the parents/carers must decide which address will be allocated as the main address for the student. The second address can be noted on the student’s hardcopy personal file.
If a second report is required to be emailed, please contact the school in order for us to record this.
