Principal’s Report

Term 3 has certainly been a very action-packed but productive term for our school community with many events happening around the school. Thank you to everyone who attended and made these events successful.

NAPLAN Results Released

Earlier this month the NAPLAN Results were released and it was certainly exciting for staff to know that our transformed and improved pedagogical framework resulted in improved results. For the first time since NAPLAN’s inception in 2008 Miami State High School is significantly above State and National Average in all of the NAPLAN domains. These being Reading, Writing, Grammar & Punctuation, Spelling, and Numeracy. Furthermore, Miami State High School has had substantial growth in the number of students achieving in the higher levels of all the above NAPLAN domains. Underpinning these results is of course the impact our quality teaching practices are having in the classroom as well as the care and consideration given to the personal wellbeing of our students to grow their confidence.

Awards Success

This term has been a term of celebrations with student success across academic, sporting and cultural sectors. The talent and ability of Miami High students is impressive and each week we are acknowledging and celebrating student success. Congratulations to all students for both individual and team achievements. It is also important to acknowledge the wonderful coaches and teachers who have invested so heavily in our teams and students to contribute to their success.

Congratulations to Mia Hori

It is with pride that I share with the school community that one of our highest achieving year 12 students Mia Hori, was presented with the Peter Doherty Outstanding Senior STEM Student Award (STEM = Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). Mia was one of only 12 students in Queensland that was recognised mid-August at a ceremony in Brisbane. Mia was presented with a cheque for $5000 for her efforts. Such an outstanding achievement, congratulations Mia!

Awards Evening

Save the Date – Tuesday 30 October 2018! On Week 4 of next term we will be holding our Annual Awards Evening in the Great Hall. This year we are combining the Academic and Sports Awards evenings as I am very conscious of the fact that there are numerous evening school events held in the next few months. More information surrounding the evening will be advertised on Facebook closer to the date.

Primary School Visits

This week we have had the pleasure to visit Miami, Burleigh Heads and Caningeraba State School to chat with students and answer some questions before they transition into high school.

Given the planning our Junior Secondary staff are now doing to ensure year 7 classes are compiled for 2019 to meet the needs of every student, I encourage all families who have not yet made the initial steps to enrol to please do so by contacting our Enrolments Officer, Voula Mihailidis on 5554 0340 or vmiha4@eq.edu.au as soon as possible to ensure a smooth start to 2019.

Year 12 QCS

Our Year 12 Students who sat the QCS Test earlier this month should be congratulated for their commitment and focus shown during this test. A huge thank you to Grant Webster (HOD – Senior Secondary) for all his work behind the scenes in making sure that these days ran smoothly. By all reports the students were very happy with the testing this year, which is a testament to the meticulous preparation by our QCS Teachers.

School Uniform

You may be aware that on 15 July 2018 Minister for Education, Grace Grace, announced from 2019 onwards a new uniform policy for Queensland Government Schools to ensure all girls have options to wear shorts and pants. Based on this announcement I am pleased to advise that the Miami State High School Uniform Shop will have available formal shorts for all females to complement their formal uniform in 2019.

Junior Formal Uniform

It is timely with the above announcement to ensure our junior students have this formal uniform option as well. Therefore I am very pleased to advise that Miami State High School is introducing a formal school uniform for our Junior School students (Years 7-9) commencing 2019. Much consideration and planning has gone into the design of this uniform which has brought great excitement to our student body. I am sure there are also many excited parents out there that will be pleased with this introduction based on the feedback I receive from the parent body with this request. The sample product will be on display in the school’s Uniform Shop at the commencement of term 4 2018.

I am very conscious of the fact that when introducing something new it comes with a price tag to parents, so great consideration has been given on how to keep costs to a minimum for parents whilst still visually looking smart. Therefore the base (shorts and skirts) will be the same as the senior formal uniform minimising parent financial outlay when their child transitions from year 9 to 10. The point of difference to differentiate junior and senior will lie with the shirt.

Students will still have the option on routine days to wear their sports uniform as opposed to their formal one, however it will be expected that all junior students will wear a formal uniform when representing the school in non-sporting events and of course at awards ceremonies.

Whole School Winter Options

In response to student/ parent feedback and as mentioned in our June 2018 School Newsletter, in 2019 our school will be introducing a school winter tracksuit. Samples are currently being compiled and when these become available parents and students will be able to view in term 4 to provide feedback. The final product will be available to purchase from the Uniform Shop in term 2 2019.

Along with the students, staff, School Council and P&C Association at Miami State High School I am looking forward to these changes and the positive impact it will have on our students.

Thank you and Happy Holidays

Our students have been very busy in the past few weeks with assessments, exams and planning for their final term. Thank you to all of our parents, carers, and teachers, who supported our students in numerous ways to ensure their individual success and personal best was achieved.

I wish every family of the Miami State High School Community a safe and relaxing spring break and I look forward to welcoming everyone back on Monday 8 October.

Elvis Lives

Elvis Lives

Miami High, are you ready to be rocked and swooned by the enduring sounds we all love and recognise as the greats by Elvis Presley? Dean Vegas, the world’s most celebrated Elvis tribute artist will be making one appearance only on stage in The Miami Great Hall. Did I hear you say “Let Me Be There’? You should dust down your “Blue Suede Shoes”, go to the link below and book your tickets now. Select ‘Dean Vegas Rocks Miami High’ under payment method and enter your credit card details. As the great man himself said, “It’s Now Or Never”. We are so excited that Dean will be accompanied by some of our Performing Arts singers and dancers who have had the privilege of being coached by Dean and his choreographer Victoria over the past two months right here at school. I want to take this opportunity to thank Dean and Victoria for providing this opportunity to our students and for being so professional and giving of their time, knowledge and experience. Come and join us so we can share this wonderful event with you. Don’t hesitate now, because we would be “All Shook Up” if you miss this.

ARTS ALIVE

Elvis has left a legacy for how the arts can raise our spirits and add value to our lives. There is no shortage of research that highlights a strong link between the Arts and engaging lives to build communities. Studying the Arts sets students up to consider careers in personal care and well-being, life balance, mental health; these are growth industries. Studying Arts at school provides pathways directly into many postsecondary degree options. Cultures around the world are defined by the artworks they produce. The Arts faculty has been making changes to subject offerings heading into 2019. We are driven to provide more students the opportunity to become involved in the arts to enhance their time here at school and well beyond. From the beginning of next year all yr. 7 students will have an arts experience across all the subjects of Dance, Digital Art, Drama, Media, Music and Visual Art. Yr. 8 students will have a choice between the Visual Arts comprising Media, Digital Art and Visual Art OR Performing Arts comprising Dance, Drama and Music. In Yr. 9 students can select any of the above options as elective subjects. As students enter Yr. 10 the opportunity to choose from all arts subjects exists with options for either general or applied pathways. This means that you can now choose any art subject: Dance, Drama, Film and Television and New Media, Music or Visual Art as either a general or applied subject. General subjects contribute towards an ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admissions Rating) score. Alternatively, you can choose any of these as applied subjects. NOTE: Arts in Practice (Digital Art and Design) is only offered as an applied subject in Yrs. 10, 11 and 12. At the yr. 9 level students do not need to be enrolled in Music Excellence or Dance Excellence to participate in these subjects for a semester. If you need further information about any of these subjects please call Eddie Leeon: 55540345 HOD The Arts or email eleeo1@eq.edu.au.

Congratulations to our many Dance and Instrumental Music students who successfully performed at the recent Gold Coast Eisteddfod and to the FTV and New Media students for their award at Race Around The Ekka. You have all been fantastic ambassadors for our school, your teachers are proud of your achievements and I know you enjoyed the experience of being involved in these activities. Viva Miami and see you all on Sunday 21st October at 2:00pm.

Interact Club

“Sports clothes, gear, and footwear for the children and youth of Timor Leste.”

Imagine sharing your football boots with your friend. A child in Timor Leste lucky enough to own some football boots will usually offer one to his friend. Both children will kick with whichever foot has a boot on it. Many on the team will have no boots. The goalies will not have gloves. Shinpads are unheard of and they have no long socks anyway to keep them on. Football (soccer) is the main game for boys, and volleyball or basketball the main games for girls.

Our Interact Club is calling for all Miami families to clean out their cupboards, drawers and storage boxes to locate outgrown and disused sports clothing, footwear both boots and sports shoes, and sports equipment to be collected and shipped to East Timor through the Rotary Club of Burleigh Heads, who will ship out their next container later this year. Other sports equipment is welcomed including Balls, Bats, Nets, Rings, Racquets, Pumps for inflation, whistles, in fact anything at all that can be reused. Collection can be arranged for larger items. At the moment Rotary have a whole football club competition (14 clubs in Viqueque) looking for help, but everything collected will be used. Interact will have a collection box up in the library or you can contact Ms Purdy at kpurd12@eq.edu.au.

Our club is also happy to announce that we raised $1380 from our resent Trivia night to help buy music equipment for IAfrica, an orphanage in Kenya. Thank you to all to came and contributed to the success.

Art Exhibition Success

Two of our grade twelve art students, Kendra Jennings and Grace Pemberton, have recently exhibited their art at the regional Creative Generations Exhibition held at A.B. Patterson College. Awards were presented by local artist, Michael Zavros, and Miami High’s, Kendra Jennings, was presented with a Commendation Award, of which only 30 were given out across the state of Queensland. It is a substantial achievement to be acknowledged at an elite level and Kendra accepted her award with humility and gratitude. Her artwork is titled, Perpetual Suffering, and is 1.5 x 1 metre, and drawn using numerous lead pencils onto paper. It depicts a child refugee, drowning in the sea off the western coast of Australia. Kendra has stated Perpetual Suffering is a social comment on the political issues that are impacting contemporary society. Congratulations, Kendra!

Come Alive – Miami State High School Dance Excel Showcase 2018

Come Alive, the 2018 Dance Excel Showcase, held on the 8 August was a spectacular evening of dance, full of energy, colour and fun showcasing everything that is Miami Dance Excellence! Involving over 100 students, it was the culmination of many months of work from students of Dance Excellence, Dance Xtreme and the many extra-curricular crews that rehearse during their lunch breaks under the direction of Ms Miranda van’t Hof. The evening included the ever popular Miami High Dance Excellence Primary Links performance where a talented group of students from a number of state schools danced alongside our Dance Xtreme students. Congratulations to all involved especially, the performers for their dedication and commitment. A special thank you must go to the Arts staff and Drama in Practice students, the Supportive Education Program staff and students and the many Miami staff who supported and assisted with the showcase. Finally, thank you to everyone who came on the night to support Miami Dance Excellence!

Dance Xtreme

The Miami High Dance Xtreme students’ performances were outstanding in the secondary schools sections (Years 7 – 12) of the Gold Coast Eisteddfod held on Thursday 16 and Friday 17 August at HOTA. The secondary sections were spread over several days due the sheer number of entries and once again Miami competed against some of the largest state and private schools from Brisbane, Toowoomba, Ipswich and the Sunshine Coast. Miami competed in the Contemporary/Lyrical section performing Hanging Tree and in the Any Style (except contemporary/lyrical and hip hop) section, performing Dem Beats. Both routines were choreographed by Ms van’t Hof, receiving honours and wonderful comments from the adjudicators of each section. The students should be very proud of their performances, particularly as 12 of the 16 students are junior students from years 7, 8 and 9. Congratulations girls on your efforts and for representing Miami High with the utmost pride demonstrating professionalism as performers and as wonderful ambassadors for the school.

Cultural Animals

Cultures around the world use representations of animals in their artworks for various purposes. In this unit of work titled, Cultural Animals, students explored the various ways animals are used and represented in artworks. The class, 8B, were inspired by concepts of totems, sustainability, preservation, conservation, and ecology. Further inspiration came from indigenous spiritual beliefs and the art of the zentangle. The artworks created by 8B are fantastic and exemplary on a national assessment level. Congratulations!

Year 8 Digital Visual Art

Year 8 Digital Visual ART (Arts In Practice Foundation Course) taught by Subject Coordinator Mr Berton.

Continuous- line Digital Self Portraits, and Movie Posters. Year eights were taught high-end use of Illustrator and Photoshop. These awesome students were pushed into higher thinking mode. On the whole, the majority never lost enthusiasm. The outcome in the use of these two program areas really did highlight where individuals shone and displayed their strengths whether via Vector or Pixel Digital Art.

Beginning with Illustrator, learning the rigors of Layers, Effects, mastering the Pen Tool, Colour Mixing and Matching, as well as identifying shadow areas to gradually build up extraordinary depth ultimately offered students a prized colour A3 sized print out to take home – hopefully to proudly frame and hang.

Mr Marco Berton
Teacher – Visual and Digital Art/Media

Year 9 Media

Year nines were given a Lead-in-Task to create a Surrealist Scape. After a Foundation Course in Photoshop, these creative students delved into their imaginations. This was the initiating part of the Out Of Context aspect of the Film and Television Subject named MEDIA. Culminating in creating a Television Commercial (TVC).

Having run through the Illustrator Foundation Course, supported with rehearsing Presentation and Questioning Etiquette, these students entered supportive class rooms spanning years 7 to 12. They questioned and surveyed, then process the data to produce stunning Illustrator generated Graphs and reports that were visually engaging by extending the use of Microsoft WORD. A very professional outcome.

Tourism Excursion

On Thursday 23 August, the Year 12 Tourism class visited Byron Bay and "The Farm" at Byron Bay as a part of their studies of Niche Tourism. We went to look at working example of Agri-tourism and how it impacts on the local tourism industry.

"The Farm", in Byron Bay, is a 'paddock to plate' experience that draws tourists both nationally and internationally. While Byron Bay, in more recent years, is a tourism hotspot.

After a quick trip to take in the sites of Byron, particularly The Lighthouse, the class then went to "The Farm". It was great experience, kicking off with a talk from Jonno, the General Manager, who was able to provide us with a socio- economic overview of the positive impact that "The Farm" has had as a stand-alone tourism destination as we well as on the surrounding areas. After that, we toured the farm, with a behind the scenes tour of the kitchens and bakery, then out to see the animals and finally some vegetable picking to finish off.

It was a great day out for the students. Thanks to Mr Smith for driving the school bus!.

Update your Contact Details

ARE YOUR CONTACT DETAILS UP TO DATE – INCLUDING EMERGENCY CONTACTS?

We have been experiencing a number of students presenting to sick bay with serious illnesses/injuries to warrant the school needing to urgently contact a parent/guardian or an emergency contact but with no success. Could you please make sure that your contact details are up to date and ensure your emergency contacts are available if you’re not able to be contacted. This is especially important for when parents are travelling away during the school term and leaving students with guardians. NOTE TO PARENTS/CARERS

The school database program can only allocate ONE address per student. If a student is residing equally between two addresses, the parents/carers must decide which address will be allocated as the main address for the student. The second address can be noted on the student’s hardcopy personal file.

If a second report is required to be emailed, please contact the school in order for us to record this.
