Principal’s Report

Dear Parents

A warm welcome back from the mid-year break to our students and families for the commencement of Semester 2. The second half of the year is always a busy one with multiple school events and of course a strong focus on deepening knowledge and strengthening learning outcomes for our students.

Reporting

Last week every Parent/Carer would have received their child’s report card for Semester 1. Reporting is an opportunity for parents to gain feedback on how their child is tracking in each of their subjects and to have conversations with them and their teachers on what strategies can be implemented for continuous improvement. As a school, our staff too will unpack our student outcomes and analyse the progress being made to always look for ways to continue to improve the learning outcomes for each of our students.

Full School Review

In the coming weeks Miami High will be undergoing a Full School Review conducted by the Department of Education & Training’s School Improvement Unit. A review takes place every four years for all state schools. This is an opportunity for reviewers to meet with our stakeholders and see first-hand some of the many positive improvements that have taken place since the last Review approximately four years ago and to provide recommendations on what we as a school should focus on for improvement over the next four years. A detailed assessment of our school will be publicly available on our website once received.

Study Tours

At the start of last week we welcomed Kyushu Sangyo High School from Japan who is visiting Miami High for a cultural/ education study tour until Friday 28 July. Kyushu students will be involved in a range of cultural experiences that are designed to enhance their English language study. Thank you to the International Department, all Miami High Staff and our wonderful buddies for contributing to the success of our Study Tour Programs.

Miami Snow Trip

Welcome back to all students and staff who attended the Miami Snow Trip to Perisher Valley during the holidays. By all accounts the trip was a great success and students are to be congratulated for their enthusiasm, behaviour and attitude throughout the week. Staff attending commented that this wonderful group of students contributed to making the trip so successful. It’s timely to thank our dedicated staff who gave up a week’s holiday to take students away, they included Mr Cross, Mr Petersen, Mr Marshall and Ms Hoy.

2017 Parent/Caregiver School Opinion Survey

Our parent community is invited to participate in this year’s School Opinion Survey and have your say about what we do well at Miami High, and how we can improve. Participation in the survey is anonymous and all information that you provide will be treated confidentially. The survey is accessed online and should take less than ten minutes to complete.

In the week beginning 31 July, the eldest child of every family will bring home a blue online access letter with further instructions including a web link and two unique access codes. Thank you in advance for assisting us to continue improving our school.

We knuckle down for yet another busy term, let’s continue with making every day count in working towards our school target of 95% attendance, which ultimately contributes to maximising every day in the classroom to improve student outcomes.

Subject Selection Evening - Tuesday 1 August 2017

Year 10 (2018): 5.30pm to 6.30pm
Year 11 (2018): 7.00pm to 8.30pm

Venue: Miami Great Hall

A 2018 subject section evening will be held on 1 August in the Miami Great Hall. This is an important evening for Year 10 (2018) students as they will be the first cohort of students in Queensland who will study under the new tertiary entrance system (ATAR).

In addition, this evening is as equally important for the Year 11 (2018) students who will begin their journey in the current tertiary entrance system (OP or ATAR). The Year 11 (2018) component of the evening will allow you and your student to choose the targeted discussions related to your student’s pathway that you wish to attend on the night (i.e. tertiary entrance or vocational training).

It is an expectation that your student attends the evening.

Following the subject selection evening, compulsory subject selection interviews will be held with every Year 10 (2018) and 11 (2018) student and their parents to finalise their subject selections. Interview bookings can be arranged using the link provided on the school website or the school’s Facebook page as of the week beginning the 24th of July.

Parent/Student/Teacher Interviews

Date: Monday 7 August 2017 (2.00pm to 7.30pm)
Venue: Miami Great Hall

In 2017, Miami State High School will continue our proactive model in regards to the scheduling of Parent Teacher Interviews. The focus of the individual interviews will be about:

  • “This is what your student has been learning”,
  • “This is what they will be learning” and
  • “This will be their upcoming assessment.”

It is an expectation that your student attends these interviews.

Please be reminded that school will finish at 12.55pm on this day to allow for Parent/Teacher/Student Interviews to commence at 2.00pm in the Great Hall. The reason for interviews to commence at 2:00pm is to enable a greater proportion of parents and students to access individual teachers for interviews.

Interview bookings can be arranged using the link provided on the school website or the school’s Facebook page as of the week beginning 24 July.

Parents are requested to make alternative transport arrangements for students on this day but please do not hesitate to contact our office on 5554 0333 should you wish your child to remain supervised until the end of a normal school day.

Student Representative Council News

The first day of June saw the Miami SHS Student Council hold their first junior movie night at the Great Hall. Pirates and Pyjamas was the theme for the evening. Several students volunteered to busk at the beginning of the evening providing lively entertainment. Thanks to Lidiya Ramkamur, Ashley Irving and Matthew Maher. Thanks to Dreamworld for the donated double passes to their theme park which were won by Year 9 student Shayla Amor. Thank you must also go to Miami Primary school for the loan of their fantastic boat prop which greeted students as they entered the courtyard. Money raised at the event has paid for our popcorn machine the SRC have purchased to be used at similar events in the future.

The senior movie night is set for 27 July; and the movie is Anchorman. Food and drinks will be on sale by the Student Council Representatives.

Gold Coast Business Expo

Miami State High school hosted the Gold Coast South Business Expo, organised by small business owner, Paula Brand, during the July holidays in the Inspire Building. The classrooms were transformed into an expo area for 120 trade tables and workshops featuring leading business people sharing their strategies on how to create a successful business. Thanks to our student leaders who assisted on the day. Here is a snapshot of photos from the day.

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability

Collecting data on school students with disability helps teachers, principals and education authorities support the participation of students with disability in schooling on the same basis as students without disability.

All Australian Governments have agreed to work together on the annual collection of data on school students with disability.

All Australian schools participate in this annual data collection.

The data provided to the Australian Government is aggregated data only. Please be reassured that the Department will not provide on to another organisation any data that can identify an individual student. The only data being collected at the school level to be reported nationally is the:

  • number of students in the school who are provided with an adjustment to address a disability;
  • level of adjustments we provide for those students; and
  • broad category of disability.

Consultation with parents is important not only for the data collection but also to ensure you are aware of the adjustments being provided to support your child. We will therefore continue to consult with you.

While only data that cannot identify your child will be submitted outside of the Department, if you do not wish for your child’s details to be included, please let me know.

Information and fact sheets are available to help you make a decision from the:

http://education.qld.gov.au/curriculum/disability-data-collection.html

http://education.gov.au/nationally-consistent-collection-data-school-students-disability

Alternatively, if you have any queries about the collection or use of this data I encourage you to contact me.

Graphics news

During the holidays Year 12 Graphics students Kira Hutchings and Mikaela Nugent attended a two day Architectural workshop run by Kahn Neil, director of Neil Design, at Griffith University. The workshop gave high school students an opportunity to experience studying architecture at a tertiary level.

They were introduced to basic measuring, drawing conventions and the concept of scale in drawings, further to communicating ideas about form, space and human occupation.

“We both learned so many new techniques for sketching and conceptualising. The whole experience gave a really cool insight into studying Architecture.” – Kira and Mikaela

Both girls plan to study Architecture when they complete their Year 12 studies at the end of this year.

Japan Study Tour 2018

Miami State High School will be conducting a Study Tour to Japan during the Winter holidays 2018. The proposed dates are to depart Wednesday 27 June and returning Monday 8 July 2018.

Whilst the final details of the itinerary are still to be confirmed, the cities we hope to visit will include:

  • Tokyo,
  • Yokohama-Kanagawa,
  • Osaka,
  • Kyoto,
  • and a cultural experience of either Hiroshima (Peace Park) or Hakone (national park of Mt Fuji.)

It is difficult to ascertain exact costing at present, but the estimated cost of the trip will be $3800 (exchange rates must be taken into consideration). This price includes:

  • Airfare
  • Taxes and airline levies
  • Hotel accommodation
  • Day excursions (transport, city tours, entrance fees)
  • 7-Day Japan Rail Pass
  • Suica card (a travel card for all other non-JR travel)
  • All breakfasts and some meals.

Students should also allow for spending money, some meals, phone card and miscellaneous extras.

To indicate your child’s interest in travelling to Japan, please sign the form below and return it to Miss Wilson in F1 or email mwils234@eq.edu.au. A parent information evening will follow Parent Teacher Interviews on Monday 7 August from 6.30pm in the Library.

In order to secure the booking, a non-refundable deposit of $300 will be requested after the evening; this will secure the airline and accommodation bookings. We will not be able to add students after deposits are paid as the deposits secure the airline booking and hotel rooms at group rate that cannot be altered. Therefore, we are unable to add students to the trip who may decide later in the year or at the beginning of 2018 that they wish to attend.

Please note that all outstanding text, resources payments and subject levies must be paid in full prior to acceptance of deposit for this tour. All future correspondence with parents will include email updates, so please indicate your email address below.

Griffith University Language Competition 2017

The annual Griffith University Languages Contest is fast approaching – this year the competition will be held on Sunday August 13 at the Gold Coast campus. This competition attracts primary, secondary and tertiary students for competitions in Japanese, French, German, Chinese, Italian and Spanish. Junior students are given a speech template to follow while senior students are expected to write and present their own original speech.

Competitions such as the Gold Coast Languages Speech Contest build confidence public speaking skills and language skills. We are looking for students in all year levels to represent MSHS in Japanese and Spanish.

Some students have already approached their language teacher and have begun memorising their speeches in preparation for the impending competition. If your child is interested in participating in this fantastic opportunity, please have your child see Miss Damon in F Block staff room for a speech template and additional information.

We will begin lunch time practices from Week 3 leading up to the competition date to ensure all students are ready and confident in presenting. Minasan ganbatte!!

SEP Showcase

At the end of last term, the SEP welcomed parents to a showcase of student work. Displays included artwork, posters, graphic design challenges and medieval castles. Students guided their families through classrooms to share their achievements and demonstrate the various technologies used throughout SEP and the whole school community. The Year 8 ITD students with the help of Mr Schnetker provided a demonstration of their gas propelled cars, while the 8A Science class screened a selection of films they had created to name Australia’s new icebreaker ship.

Students challenged their families to tangram puzzles and probability games as well as grammatical battles on the interactive smart board in G10. Teachers were on hand to talk with parents and students about their accomplishments and future goals and the afternoon was wrapped up with some wonderful refreshments prepared and served by Year 12 QCIA Community and Citizenship Studies students.

Kokoda 2017!

The Kokoda Challenge event that took place last weekend was one of the most difficult in memory. The mud, rain and cold made it an extreme challenge for all teams competing.

There were three Miami State High teams and three students from Miami on the Kokoda Kids.

The Miami teams included: Team Mateship 48 km – Mrs Millett, Finn Robinsen, Aaliyah Maoate, Alex Johnston and Dayna Lennon

Team Endurance 96 – Miss Robinson, Talua Lui, Kayla Hirakawa, Riley Bristow and Connor Brooks.

Team Courage 96 km – Mrs Locke, Zac Murphey, Ky Curtis, Declan O’Brien and Bailey Gray. Team Courage crossed the finish line in just over 24 hours – what an achievement!

Finally, Jackson Buckland, Kobi Rankin and Sarah Mc Allister were walking as part of the Kokoda Kids. This is a one year commitment which includes training, volunteer work and a final trip to Paupa New Guinea to walk the Kokoda Track.

Congratulations to all staff, students support crews and volunteers. You make the event amazing!

The Parenting Teenagers Course

The Parenting Teenagers course will be held at Miami State High School for 5 consecutive Wednesday evenings commencing Wednesday 16 August from 7.00 – 9.00 pm.

This course will equip parents and carers of children aged 11 to 18 years old with strategies to build a healthy relationship with their teenager while guiding them into adulthood. Whether you consider you have strong parenting skills and all is going well, or if you are facing challenges, you will benefit from the five sessions in which you will learn practical ways to help support your teenager, communicate effectively, discover how your teenager feels loved, set appropriate boundaries and let them go gradually so that they can take on increasing responsibility for their own behaviour.

The five session topics are:

  1. Keeping the end in mind, 2. Meeting our teenager’s needs, 3. Setting boundaries, 4. Developing emotional health, 5. Helping them make good choices

The format of each session:

  1. Viewing a DVD presentation including input from the hosts Nicky and Sila Lee as they share from their experience of parenting four children, advice from parenting experts, and interviews with parents and teenagers.
  2. Guided small group discussion to give a chance to talk about the topics presented. Each guest is given a manual with exercises and questions for these discussion times.

The Parenting Teenagers Course is based on Christian principles but these principles apply to every parent. It is not a Christian/religious presentation and you do not need to be Christian/religious to benefit from the course. The course is run successfully in many countries throughout the world.

The cost of the course:

An optional investment to help cover costs of guest manual and refreshments (suggested only - $10).

Please note that places are limited. To confirm your attendance, or if you have any queries please feel free to contact me at shanes@chappy.org.au or on 0424473790.

Hints for Creating Resilient Families

Rediscover some family rituals

Family rituals are strong predictors of resilience. It doesn’t matter whether it is the family walk after dinner, the Sunday roast, the Friday night pizza or the Saturday morning clean up – rituals are highly protective. The best rituals often cost nothing. These are the activities you hope that later on your children will reminisce and say “Mum always made sure we did this” or Dad always made sure we did that”.

Wellbeing Update

Welcome back after a restful two weeks holiday. This term will be quite a busy one with our first Good Vibes Day being for Year 11 on 25 July. We have some excellent guest speakers booked in covering topics such as Healthy Relationships with Simon Santosha, Body Image and Mindfulness with Nicole Joy, Israel the DJ doing some Hip Hop, Headspace will be chatting about Managing Change. These days have always been very successful with positive feedback from the students. A reminder that the day follows the usual bell times and full school uniform is to be worn. Attendance is compulsory. The other Good Vibes Days for this term include Year 8 on 15 August and Year 12 on 12 September.

Compassionate Cities Project

Our School is involved in the Compassionate Cities Project run by Griffith University aimed at all the schools on the Gold Coast to look at ways to make our city a more compassionate place to live. The Compassionate Cities Project is based upon to Charter for Compassion that was written to ask people to commit to make the world a more peaceful and compassionate place. This Charter has been signed by many countries in the world. Australia was one of the first countries to sign the Charter. So it was decided that it was time to put this Charter in action here on the Gold Coast.

What is Compassion? “Compassion means to have the courage to descend into the reality of human experience” (Paul Gilbert).

This means to identify the reasons people are behaving the way they are and take a positive action to assist where possible.

How do we do that? To reach out and help someone in need or to be that person to stop the bullying, to perform Random Acts of Kindness, or even just to lend an ear to a person that needs to talk.

Year 11 student Kobi Rankin and I were invited to the Compassionate Cities meeting that was attended by many schools on the Gold Coast with the purpose of committing to make their school a more compassionate place. Each school spoke of their project that they were embarking on and why they believe it will benefit their school and community. These presentations were also attended by Mayor Tom Tate and a proposal put forward to Mayor Tate with ways to make the Gold Coast a more compassionate city. As we know the recent events that have occurred in Mayor Tate’s life with his wife having a heart attack in Singapore airport and the struggle that occurred afterwards. Mayor Tate made is clear that it was due to the compassion displayed by the people around him that gave him strength to carry on while his wife was in a coma. Mayor Tate spoke very highly of the students and their presentations and committed to working with the students to implement their ideas to help make the Gold Coast a more compassionate city.

MIAMI MOVEMENT FOR COMPASSION – a short film competition

Miami’s commitment to the Compassionate Cities Project is our short film competition.

We are asking students or community groups to put together a short film 1-4 mins to show what compassion looks like. It can show ransom acts of kindness, bullying, domestic violence, mental health, helping someone in need, showing care to animals or any other idea you may have.

Film your idea and submit it to Miami High, attend the Gala film night on 16 August and show your support for making this community a more compassionate place. The night will have the screening of the films, musical and dance performances and guests from Griffith to speak about the Charter for Compassion. Our Wellbeing Expo will be in the courtyard and food and drinks available. This is a gold coin donation for entry and all are welcome.

All the entry details are attached, the deadline is fast approaching. If you are interested on participating in this event please contact Tiffany Grant on 55540333 or email tgran17@eq.edu.au.

Please find the attached entry details.

Wellbeing Tip

Our strength of the week this week is HOPE. We all have hopes and dreams and sometimes as we get older these can change or fade. HOPE means to look forward to the future put our positive thoughts into positive actions to achieve or dreams and goals. What are you HOPING for? How will you get there? When you have HOPE, how does that make you feel?

Self-talk has a big influence on how we think and behave and this influences our outcomes. What is your self-talk like? What does positive self-talk look like? Does it look like NSW or QLD?

News from Chappy

Welcome to the third chaplaincy snapshot taken from the SU Qld (chaplaincy employer) annual snapshot of school chaplaincy. Throughout 2016 SU collected information on chaplain’s activities and impact to give an overview of the role of government school chaplains throughout Qld. As mentioned for the first snapshot, I share some of the information in this document to help you better understand who chaplains are and what a chaplain does. The findings of this research are obviously based on collective data, from both primary and high schools. Data would vary from school to school. (You can view the full document at suqld.org.au/snapshot2017).

If you have any queries or think I may be able to assist you in some way please contact me at school or by email shanes@chappy.org.au. My days at Miami State High School are Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. The remainder of the week I am at Miami State School.

What Do Students Talk to Chaplains About?

Students approach school chaplains for support across a broad range of personal, family, friendship and school issues.

Could you imagine packing your bags and leaving everything behind? Globally, more than 65.1 million people have been forced to flee their homes due to conflict. More than half of these are children. This year the Miami community has an opportunity to take part in the ‘Backpack Challenge’. We’re making a change by packing our bags and living out of a backpack, with only the essentials, for 40 hours to raise funds for refugee and displaced children. Fill your bag with food, water and warm clothes; whatever you think you'll need to get through.

This year's 40 Hour Famine will support work in regions heavily affected by the crisis; Syria, South Sudan and their neighbouring countries. The funds you raise will help provide food, water, blankets, tarps, temporary shelter and safe spaces for some of the world's most vulnerable children.

The World Vision 40 Hour Famine is officially held on the weekend of Friday 11 August from 8.00pm until Sunday 13 August 12 noon (or at a time which suits you).

Students can collect information and permission forms from the Chappy, RTC room or I block staffroom (for Years 7 and 8 students). Alternatively you can register your child (and/or yourself) online:

  1. Go to www.40hourfamine.com.au and click ‘sign up’
  2. Make sure you register to join ’Miami State High School’. Please DO NOT register as a team leader.
  3. You can then share the link to your participant page with family and friends, or direct people to the 40 Hour Famine website where they can search your name or ‘Miami State High School’ and make online donations by credit card, PayPal, or make a cash/cheque pledge. Please note that donations of $2 or more made online can be tax deductible.

If your child is not participating and you would like to make a donation to our school effort you can visit the link below and donate to ‘Miami State High School’.

Update your Contact Details

ARE YOUR CONTACT DETAILS UP TO DATE – INCLUDING EMERGENCY CONTACTS?

We have been experiencing a number of students presenting to sick bay with serious illnesses/injuries to warrant the school needing to urgently contact a parent/guardian or an emergency contact but with no success. Could you please make sure that your contact details are up to date and ensure your emergency contacts are available if you’re not able to be contacted. This is especially important for when parents are travelling away during the school term and leaving students with guardians. Please feel free to contact the school either by email admin@miamishs.eq.edu.au or telephoning 5554 0333 to confirm your current details.

Parent Contact

NOTE TO PARENTS/CARERS

The school database program can only allocate ONE address per student. If a student is residing equally between two addresses, the parents/carers must decide which address will be allocated as the main address for the student. The second address can be noted on the student’s hardcopy personal file.

If a second report is required to be emailed, please contact the school in order for us to record this.
